Is Razer a Good Brand? – Unbiased Brand Review 2022

Crotchet! The answer is neither a clear “yes” nor a clear “no”. That said, Razer is the world’s leading lifestyle brand for gamers. It specializes in making some elite, better say some, seriously aesthetically appealing hardware.

Thus, Razer is a good brand mostly admired by those, specifically gamers, who see it easy to fritter thousands – to look exclusive. On the other hand, it’s not the good, go-to, brand for an average gamer or a non-gamer type of computer nerd.

One bird-eye view about the brand is that “at Razer, you pretty often get a below-average quality for an above-average price”. This means that the brand has not been that much able to show up as an all-embracing name.

Still, it’s considered a titan in the gaming (computer) gears world. It has a diverse product range with lots of them carrying the day whereas some falling flat.

Anyways, here’s my detailed touch on if or not Razer is a good brand and whether its products are worth it to get.

Is Razer a Good Brand in 2022?

To get to a confident answer to the question, here are all the different things we’ll be looking at, apropos of the Razer brand.

  1. Razer’s market cap and growth over the years
  2. Razer’s product diversity
  3. Other programs and services

After being done with all three coefficients, we’ll somehow arrive at a sensible answer to the question.

So, let’s get started with exploring.

But, before that, let me put a few words about the brand’s history and background, etc.

The Company’s Background – Razer’s History

Razer is a Singaporean-American multinational technology company dual-headquartered in Singapore and Irvine, California, USA. Founded in 2005 by Min-Liang Tan and Robert Krakoff, the company designs develops, and deals in consumer electronics, gaming hardware, and other financial services, etc.

According to the brand’s official blook, the company started as a subsidiary of Karna LLC in 1998. GM of Karna, Robert Krakoff, met a Singaporean entrepreneur and hardcore gamer, Min-Liang Tan, and that was when it all began.

Slowly gradually, in 2005, both the founders officially acquired the rights from Karna to the Razer brand and formally established the Razer Inc.

The company started ruling the gaming world by launching the Razer Diamondback gaming mouse, which proved to be the top-selling gaming gear of all time. Besides, it also takes the credit for launching the world’s first and fastest gaming-grade wireless mouse – the Razer Mamba.

Razer started dealing in mechanical (gaming) keyboards in 2010 and launched the world’s thinnest gaming laptop – the Razer Blade, in 2011. The company entered into the headsets line in 2012 by launching its Kraken line gaming headset.

It has won several awards for its high-end gaming peripherals and Blade laptops. And, has built the world’s largest gamers’ ecosystem with some 17 odd offices around the world.

Well, let’s now get to the core thing i.e. is Razer a good brand?

#1. Razer’s Market Cap and Growth

Although Razer’s growth or market cap curve is not that favorable from 2015, actually 2017, and onwards. The company has still documented a decent uproar in 2019 and 2020.

From $4.45 Billion worth in 2017, the company fell to $1.20 Billion in 2018. But, in 2019 and 2020, the figures soared up to $1.45 and then $2.72 Billion, respectively. This shows that the company has witnessed decent growth in the two consecutive years.

As far as the 2022 figures are concerned, the market cap of the company has again dropped down a bit, recording $2.15 Billion for this year – as of March 2022.

Seeing this mixed curve, one can easily say that Razer is not an all-embracing brand. It is a good brand for some, perhaps, for those looks/charm-conscious computer geeks and hardcore gamers. But, not for all and sundry. And the reason is simple – it puts some soar price tags on its products.

#2. Razer’s Product Diversity

You name a gaming gadget, and the company would already be dealing in it. That’s true. Being a titan in the gaming world, Razer covers a vast array of different high-end gaming gears. Here’s an overview of the brand’s overall provisions and my verdict on “are Razer products worth it?”.

Razer’s Gaming Mice

The company, as mentioned earlier, started the race by releasing some high-end gaming-grade mice. With some weird yet unique titles, the mice here are named after snakes and serpents.

The company launched its first gaming mouse named Razer Boomslang, which was surpassed in popularity by no one else but the company’s own Diamondback gaming mouse later on.

Some of the famous mice lines by Razer include Atheris, Deathadder, Naga, Basilisk, Mamba, Viper, and Abyssus.

With a few of these mice ranges being suspended whereas others still ruling the gaming market, Razer is quite prominent in the gamers’ world. You can easily find some great, multifunctional, and multi-buttoned mice in the Razer’s gaming mice ranges.

Razer’s Keyboards

It has a vast array of gaming-grade keyboards ruling the market. The company loves naming its keyboards after weird spiders or likewise creatures.

Some of its widely known keyboard lines include the Huntsman keyboards, BlackWidow, Cynosa, and Ornata keyboards. The company has a wireless gear release, as well, called “Turret”, which is a combo of wireless keyboards and mice.

Besides, there are some mini gaming keypads too in the list i.e. Tartarus and Orbweaver, etc. with the latter one being discontinued whereas the former one still winning the hearts.

Razer’s Gaming Laptops, Phones and, Monitor Setups

The company has redefined the term “portability” in gaming laptops. It takes the credit of introducing some truly high-end yet ultraportable gaming laptops for all the elite gamers out there.

Razer introduced its first and the world’s thinnest gaming laptop, the Razer Blade, back in 2011. Blade 15 and Blade Stealth series are the most award-winning laptop lines of the company.

The company fits its gaming laptops with some high-end innards i.e. 8-cored CPUs, topnotch GPUs, massive memory, and storage, and decent batteries. Thus, leaving no stone unturned in replying a big “yes” to the questions, “is Razer a good gaming laptop?”, or, “is Razer a good brand for laptops?”.

One of the matchless innovations by Razer is its Core X Chroma – the flagship external GPU solution. This multifunctional and multi-socketed (with Thunderbolt 3, etc.) machine can turn your laptop into a desktop-class or workstation setup.

It has got an elite-level monitor release as well. The 27-inched Raptor Monitor is a gaming-class monitor with some premium specs, including accurate colors from all angles, snappier response times, and smooth pixel definition. Yeah, but like the company’s other products, this monitor setup is also considered to be extremely extravagant.

Razer Inc. has also released an android-based phablet in 2017. Gamers-focused, this smartphone also featured aluminum chassis and the same vigor – it’s also a gaming beast. At present, there are two mobiles available in the market i.e. Razer Phone and Razer Phone 2.

Razer’s Headphones/Headsets

If you ask “is Razer a good brand for headsets and headphones”, I would riposte, “Yes, Gamers just love to ride Razer on their heads and ears”.

Yes, the brand has a comprehensive variety of cool and classic gamers-focused headsets and headphones. The company’s Kraken headset line is the most widely recognized gaming headset range across the board.

Some of the other widely known headset lines include the Opus headset range, Thresher, and Tetra headsets, etc. The company takes care of femme gamers as well, and that’s why it has released the Kraken Kitty headsets – headsets with pretty looks (kitty ears, etc.) and girlish colors i.e. pink and green, etc.

Besides that, Razer corners the market with its famous Airpods-like wireless headphones known as Hammerhead headphones.

Other Provisions

Razer has loads of other gaming gears in its provisions as well. That list encompasses Gaming Controllers, Computer Cases, Mouse Pads, and Mats, Soundbars, Speakers, Microphones, Webcams, eGPUs, and Gaming Chairs, etc.

That said, the statement still stands the same i.e. every gadget holds a shocking price tag at Razer.

#3. Razer’s Other Programs and Services

The company deals in lots of other subaltern programs and services including several software services as well as some capital-related amenities.

According to the company’s official data, Razer’s software platform, which has some 125 million users across the globe is home to many innovative software facilities. Some of the company’s popularly known software services include.

  • Razer Chroma – the RGB lighting tech system (for a comprehensive multicolor gaming ecosystem).
  • Razer Synapse – a cloud-based hardware configuration (and storage) service for a personalized gaming setup.
  • Razer Cortex – a free system optimization tool (game launcher and optimizer).

Besides, they deals in different financial and game payment services too.

  • Razer Gold is one such service by the company offering payment facilities to gamers, youth, and others.
  • Whereas the Razer Fintech services is another initiative by the company offering various Fintech services.

Their newest lineup from the Blade series is definitely worth a look, moreover, the aesthetics Razer products provide is off the charts and have no parallel.

Are Razer products actually good?

Due to Razer’s strong focus on gaming, their products, such as laptops and other peripherals, have mind blowing specs and jaw dropping quality, making them some of the best on the market.

Conclusion – My Verdict and What Razer’s Users Opine About the Brand

Now, after everything is said and done, let’s throw a look at what people, especially Razer’s customers, say about the brand. This will eventually lead us to an even more appropriate answer to all the questions and confusion regarding the brand.

So, here’re some of the most common comments on the brand and its products I found on the internet.

  • Not a laptop or monitor, even if you get some small computer peripheral i.e. a mouse, keyboard, headset, etc., at Razer, you’d need to rob a bank. The price tags at Razer are just so terrible if and when compared to its adversaries.
  • Their products are good. But, to be honest, the quality is not at par if you go for comparing the price that you pay to the value that you get in return.
  • Their headphones/headsets are, without doubt, more than perfect for gamers. But they never show the same crisp for other general purposes. i.e. music and entertainment, etc., perhaps due to their gamers-focused bass and other settings.
  • Again, whether you go for buying a laptop here, or even just a peripheral, you’ll no doubt get one. The thing is, you’d need to fritter more bucks than you usually do somewhere else.
  • Razer’s Synapse and Chroma RGB syncing services are massively loved and are the perfect gamer’s things.
  • And the keyboards, no matter average or high-end, show up flimsy and starts insane crackle sounds after a little use. And their mice, most of them despite being tagged ergonomic, don’t often do good at that.

In a nutshell, Razer is a good brand for you only and only if you are an aristocrat type of gamer. Someone who is madly conscious about standing out of the crowd. Otherwise, you can easily find ways to skip it until and unless you are not a diehard fan of the name.
